Irish Lifeboat Crew Responds To ‘Unusual Request’

A crew from Ballycotton Ireland’s Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) chapter responded to what some are referring to as “unusual request.”

What was the “unusual request?”

A juvenile dolphin became stuck in the shallow waters along the Irish coast and was separated from its pod. Concerned folks spotted the dolphin and called the Ballycotton RNLI and the Ballycotton Coast Guard.

Eolan Walsh, Ballycotton RNLI Coxswain responded to the alert and two of his crew took to the water to swim alongside the creature and guide it back to open water.

Mr. Walsh said: “The dolphin appeared to be quite young and may have possibly been separated from its pod.

“On arrival, two of the volunteer crew members entered the water and swam alongside the dolphin and guided it towards open water.

“This was an unusual request for Ballycotton RNLI but we were happy to assist.”

Eyewitness Norma Gleeson took these amazing pictures and commended the rescue crew for their efforts.

Norma said: “An emotional few hours watching the dolphin heading towards difficulty.

“But then the Coast Guard and Lifeboat arrived and they were so efficient and kind, and went to huge lengths to get the dolphin back out to sea. Applause and Thank You. Well done.”
