Maine Teen Finds Rare Blue Lobster

A 14-year-old and her father made an amazing discovery Saturday morning when a supremely rare blue lobster found its way into their trap.
Meghan LaPlante and her father, Jay LaPlante, were halting traps around 10:45 a.m. when they discovered the bright blue lobster, a find that oceanographers estimate is a 1 in a 2 million chance.
Those are some odds!
The strange coloration comes from a genetic defect that causes the lobster to produce an excess amount of a certain protein. Usually lobsters are dark green or brown.
With a discovery akin to winning the lottery, we’re even more impressed that Meghan chose to donate the blue lobster to the Maine State Aquarium in West Boothbay Harbor, Maine, about 30 miles northeast of Portland.
The lobster, who she named Skyler, will avoid boiling water and join three other blue lobsters and an orange lobster in the aquarium’s tanks.
If any of our readers find themselves in Maine, go check out Miss Meghan’s Lobster Catch and drop by the aquarium to see Skyler for yourselves.
