Think you’ve seen it all? Think again.
Our oceans are home to many of the world’s most unique and beautiful creatures. Scientists have photographed and studied animals such as the mischievously intelligent Mimic Octopus, the Giant Squid, Japanese Giant Spider Crabs, and even the elusive Goblin Shark. But sometimes the creatures of the deep brave the shallow waters to put on a display that only the luckiest humans ever get to see.
One of those displays is so awesome, we had to share.
The National Geographic show Untamed Americas featured what is likely the largest school of mobular rays ever filmed. This record-breaking gathering of the so-called “devil rays” occurred off the coast of Baja, California, in the Sea of Cortez. According to the documentarian, the locals had never seen anything like it.
Tens of thousands of mobular rays – most seven feet across – took over the waters off the coast of Baja and leaped through the air. These amazing creatures seem to be flying, defying gravity and challenging what scientists and the public know about this family of rays. Check it out.
Experts are divided on why this massive school gathered in the Sea of Cortez and whether they will return season after season, but one thing is for certain: this is one of the the most jaw-dropping spectacles you will ever see.
