This Is Our Underwater Future – ‘Oceanscrapers’

We’re not so sure about this idea, but it is pretty cool – underwater skyscrapers (oceanscrapers).
This is the vision of Belgian architect Vincent Callebaut called Aequora. The underwater community would consists of 1,000 towers, 250 floors and house up to 20,000 people. But the truly phenomenal aspect of this vision is that the structures would be made from plastic waste that is polluting our oceans, using 3-D printing technology.
The structures would be located in the waters off the coast of Rio de Janeiro and would be accessed from a dome-like structure on the surface. The plans call for the exteriors to be built with thicker material to compensate for the underwater pressure.
The concept of living underwater is nothing new. There have been plans for a hotel beneath the sea in the Bahamas and in Dubai. This vision is unique, though, because of Callebaut’s goal of building the structures to be completely self-sufficient.
We’ll see what the future holds for this idea. In the meantime, we’ll just have to carry on above the waves.
