Rockfish Miracles and Medical Breakthroughs
Medical breakthroughs and rockfish miracles are occurring at the Vancouver Aquarium.
Not too long ago, a copper rockfish at the aquarium developed cataracts and needed surgery to have one of its eyes removed. Not uncommon.
But what the veterinarians did for the rockfish next was a first.
Surgeons fit the fish with a glass eye!

This was necessary not only for cosmetic reasons but health reasons as well. You see, when a fish is missing an eye it appears weak or sick and other fish, seeing this vulnerability, gang up and attack.
Copper rockfish inhabit areas from the Gulf of Alaska to the Pacific side of the Baja California peninsula and have a life span averaging 40+ years.
Hopefully the new eye will allow this special rockfish to live to be forty as well.
