The Sky’s The Limit For This New Bermuda Triangle Theory

We’ve all heard of the Bermuda Triangle, and all of the stories and disappearances stemming from the spooky corner of the ocean, located between Bermuda, Florida, and Puerto Rico. Along with the tales, everyone’s probably heard at least one of the sometimes eccentric theories of why these things happen.

Well, there’s a new one!

While most of the ideas that have come before have had to do with something in or under the ocean of the Bermuda Triangle, this new speculation released by the Science Channel’s “What on Earth?” series suggests that it has something to do with a cloud phenomena spotted near the Bahamas.

A couple of meteorologists noticed a rare formation of hexagonal clouds in a satellite image. Not just one either… there were several of them!

“These types of hexagonal shapes over the ocean are, in essence, air bombs. They’re formed by what are called microbursts,” says Dr. Randy Cerveny. “They’re blasts of air that come down out of the bottom of the cloud and then hit the ocean and create waves that can sometimes be massive in size.”

Now, that explanation for the waves might explain why the ships that have gone missing in the Bermuda triangle, but what about the planes? As it turns out, microbursts are pretty notorious for that, too, having taken out a recorded nearly 10 planes to date, with the winds that can average 100 miles per hour.

We sure wouldn’t want to fly through a downdraft like that. Talk about turbulence. But they’re very difficult to spot. Not to mention rare— and extremely dangerous. Bermuda, we have a problem.

Nobody can really say for sure if this or any of the other theories surrounding the mysterious Bermuda Triangle are the real deal, or even the best answer. There have really been too many strange things that have happened there for any one to make complete sense of the mystery, but there is no doubt that this is one very interesting find for Dr. Randy Cerveny and Dr. Steve Miller.
