Tragic News From Vancouver

We’ve been covering the killer whale baby boom that has been occurring in the Pacific Northwest over the past year. It’s been a lot of great news for the struggling population. But over the past weekend came some sad news. A young calf was found dead off the coast of Vancouver.

Officials from the Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans reported that a dead female killer whale was recovered near Sooke, Vancouver. The orca was under seven feet long.

It is not yet known if the orca was one of the calves recently born and a necropsy is scheduled to determine the cause of death.

While we celebrate the recent orca baby boom, we’re also reminded that life in the wild is a constant struggle.

As details emerge, we’ll pass them along.
