The Ugliest Babies You’ve Ever Adored

As the Washington Post points out, these baby Dalmatian pelicans are UGG-LY! But, you know, cute in their own baby way. (We think it’s just because they’re so little.)

Anyways, the San Diego Zoo’s Avian Propagation Center is hand-raising two of these baby pelicans because their parents were unable to according to the zoo’s blog.

Aww.. See… not too bad when they are little? At first, you may wonder what that little ball of skin is doing wriggling around like that, but then you realize its a baby bird just trying to eat some seeds.

Remember us saying that they better enjoy it while the lovin lasts?

Yeah, thats because the avian experts are monitoring these two round-the-clock and feeding them five times a day to ensure they grow up to be healthy and productive members of the Dalmatian pelican society. Problem is they are NOT going to get cuter as they get older!

Although these chicks do not have beauty to look forward to, Dalmatian pelicans to rock some other fun facts:

• They are one of the rarest species of pelicans around.
• They also happen to be the largest of all pelican species.

So although they are ugly, they are the biggest and most rare of them all!

The chicks at the San Diego Zoo are about two weeks old and will start getting their downy feathers in the middle of April.

So like we said – they better soak up the lovin now because it’s going to start fading fast, at least on a national level. We’re willing to best the bird lovers at the zoo will keep loving these chicks right into their ugly adulthood. 😉
