Video: Behind the Scenes of the 2015 Sea Lion Crisis

So far, 2015 has been an unprecedented year in Southern California. The California marine mammal stranding network is being pushed to its limits. Non-profits, zoos and parks like SeaWorld are caring for hundreds of sea lion pups that have been found along the California coast injured, sick and starving.

SeaWorld has flown in team members from Orlando, San Antonio and Busch Gardens Tampa. They have temporarily suspended their Beluga Interaction Program and their incredibly popular Sea Lion Show.

All this to care for the more than 400 Sea Lions that have been rescued so far in 2015. AwesomeOcean had to go and witness what has been called the “Sea Lion Crisis of 2015” for ourselves.

SeaWorld San Diego granted us access to film and interact with team members from California, Texas and Florida. We met men and women who have been working tirelessly for two months straight to help save these sick, injured and starving sea lion pups.

We urge you to watch our video detailing the rescue efforts.

How can you help?

If you find a stranded marine mammal on the west coast please call NOAA stranding hotlines: 1-866-767-6114 or 1-800-853-1964.

If you would like to get more directly involved or would like to donate money please check out the Marine Mammal Center to view a list of organizations who are participating in these rescue efforts.

Together we can help these animals.

Without organizations like SeaWorld San Diego, these animals face little chance of survival. But thanks to the hardworking and dedicated professional, they have a second chance at life.
