Virgin-born sawfish? A new study says its not only possible, but happening in Florida.
Ecologists say the birth of these seven sawfish were less likely a freak occurrence and more of a response to dwindling populations.
“We were conducting routine DNA fingerprinting of the sawfish found in this area in order to see if relatives were often reproducing with relatives due to their small population size,” said Andrew Fields, PhD student at Stony Brook University.
“What the DNA fingerprints told us was altogether more surprising: female sawfish are sometimes reproducing without even mating.”
