What do squid have in common with bunny rabbits?

Not their ears.

Scientists at the University of Melbourne felt the need to study the copulating habits of dumpling squid. Their reasons behind such a study have not been revealed.

But nevertheless, all research is valuable, and you’re not going to believe the dedication dumpling squid have for their mating sessions!

These squid, which live off the coast of Australia, place incredible value on sex, which is evidenced by their 3-hour copulation marathons. No joke.

shock

Scientists fished 15 couples out of the water and transferred them to a tank for observation. They introduced one of the squid’s top predators, a fish called the sand flathead, into the tank and were surprised by what went down.

If the predator was around before mating began, the female might spray ink to hide herself from the predator, but once mating began, the dumpling squid just flat-out ignored the sand flathead and carried on regardless of the threat.

Let us get that straight:

In the squid’s mind, someone could be coming to kill you, but sex is more important.

Throw a sock on the door friends, because once that train gets going there is no de-railing it.

shrug

Research also showed that females were a bit smarter than their male counterparts. However, smarts do the squid no good whatsoever when the male latches onto his woman with a vice-like grip and utter determination to finish the deed.

AND even if they survive their 3-hour love making session, it exhausts the squid to the point of total lethargy, leaving them unable to swim for another 30 minutes.

No one should be surprised that the life expectancy of a dumpling squid is quite short.
