A sea turtle named Harbor was finally ready to return to the wild. He spent two years at the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium in a rehabilitation program.

His recovery is nothing short of miraculous. When he arrived in Pittsburgh he had a shattered pelvis, a severed spine and was unable to move his back flippers at all. If he hadn’t been rescued it is likely e would have died within days. He really seemed like a hopeless case, but the zoo’s Sea Turtle Second Chance program was ready for the challenge.

The coordinator of the Sea Turtle Second Chance program, Josianna Romasco, said, “I was excited to accept the challenge of working with Harbor. We weren’t going to give up easily on getting him back to the ocean. These little turtles are resilient. I knew with Harbor it would take time, but I had a good feeling things would work out.”

Luckily for Harbor, things did work out. They worked out in the best possible way because he was able to return to his home of the ocean earlier this year.

Without the hard work, dedication and TLC provided by the Sea Turtle Second Chance program Harbor’s recovery would have been impossible. Hopefully, the program will continue this success in the future.
