WATCH: 11 Endangered Sea Turtles Released Into Ocean
In November 2014, 72 endangered Kemp’s Ridley Sea Turtles were rescued off the coast of Massachusetts during a mass cold stranding event.
Those 72 turtles were quickly taken to the New England Aquarium which applied life saving aid and helped to stabilize these critically endangered animals.
Scientists estimate there are around 1,000 – 10,000 nesting female Kemp’s Ridley turtles left in our oceans.
Once stabilized, they were transported by the US Coast Guard from the New England Aquarium to SeaWorld Orlando where the Animal Care team gave them full examinations including blood work and radiographs which helped diagnose additional health issues.
Most of the turtles were suffering from pneumonia and were given antibiotics, a vitamin treatment, and fluid therapy.
When they first arrived they weighed 2 to 5 pounds, but upon release they tipped the scales at a healthy 4 to 6.5 pounds.
Under the supervision of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission, team members from SeaWorld Orlando transported the sea turtles to the National Sea Shore where they were released back into the Atlantic Ocean.
The release of these animals plays a critical role in the long term survival of the Kemp’s Ridley Sea Turtle which has seen its population collapse due to pollution, fishing nets, egg poaching, habitat loss, and illegal wildlife trade.
We are grateful for the amazing people at the New England Aquarium, US Coast Guard and SeaWorld Orlando for helping these animals get a second chance at life.
