YAY For New Species!

But Now We Are Forgetting The Others!

Do you love animals? Well obviously you would if you are reading this. How cool is it, that, every day, new species are being discovered?!

In 2014, we already have discovered 10 new species, from several types of microorganisms to large invertebrates. However, these new species discoveries seem to mask the fact that THOUSANDS of species are dying off, and not because of natural causes.

Animal Ambassador for SeaWorld and Busch Gardens, Julie Scardina, regularly tweets out articles about how more and more species are dying off. Did you know that recently, the bird that inspired the movie Rio (who was the last of it’s kind) died? Habitats are being destroyed, and that means that we will keep losing animals and beautiful species.

Human greed is making it almost impossible to preserve environments for these wonderful animals. By buying the latest smart phone, people are paying to destroy a gorilla’s habitat all for a shatterproof phone screen. So looking at this situation, though new species are being discovered, that doesn’t make up for the species that are currently going extinct.

This is why it is so important to have zoos and aquariums. Zoos and aquariums educate us about how our actions impact animals in the wild and the environment. Just by driving to and from work, we are polluting the air, which we breathe and share with animals. Instead of driving, we can take public transit. A simple action like that can reduce pollution in the environment, and make our Earth livable for future generations.

More often than not, people don’t know the environmental effects we have on animals and the environment, until they visit a zoo or an aquarium. Inspiration can come from educators, or simply from seeing a beautiful animal, and this new-found inspiration can truly change how we see our actions.
