Dolphin Assisted Births?

Let’s just say, those dolphins ain’t got time for that.

Awesome Ocean posted a piece this week on the unique phenomenon of dolphin-assisted births for people.

We retold the story of a couple going to Hawaii to give birth with dolphins – an event being promoted by The Sirius Institute

The article sparked quite a debate on Facebook – pros and cons. That’s what this website aims for and we enjoy it.

The problem is, many took the article to mean Awesome Ocean was endorsing the practice. However, it was our intent to simply inform our audience that this was happening. It was easy to see this is not a conventional, or medically appropriate was of delivering your youngster.

We wrote:

“However, some experts disagree on the benefits of dolphin assisted births, claiming the unpredictability of wild animals could put the mother and child in harm’s way.”

The Awesome Ocean Team are fans of celebrating marine life but we are also fans of solid and trusted science. We enjoy bringing you viral videos and stories that you don’t see everyday.

Nothing in Sirius Institute’s research leads us to believe dolphin-assisted births are beneficial. Quite the opposite, dolphins are wild animals and can react in ways that can be dangerous to people.

We think childbirth assistance is best left to trained professionals. We also think the dolphins have plenty of better things to do than take care of your child.
