UPDATE: Dolphin Assisted Births?

Giving birth underwater isn’t a new thing, but having a dolphin assist in the process is!

A few years ago, an American couple went to Hawaii to plan such a birth. When asked by the Charlotte Observer why they decided on that birthing path, mama said:

It is about reconnecting as humans with the dolphins so we can coexist in this world together and learn from one another.”

Dolphins are highly intelligent mammals, but what are the benefits of including them in the birthing process?

Igor Tscharkofsy from the Sirius Institute has been studying water birth for quite some time. He even started birthing babies in the Black Sea with the dolphins that inhabit the area.

The Sirius Institute states:

Following these first instances of dolphin-assisted birth, some of the reported observations include a mother and baby playing with the dolphins within 45 minutes of the birth, and a dolphin escorting a newborn human baby to the surface for its first breath.”

Many people believe that dolphin assisted therapy can help and/or heal several health conditions. A few include; cerebral palsy, depression, autism and Down’s Syndrome.

As far as dolphin assisted pregnancies, advantages vary from the child developing faster to a higher possibility of being ambidextrous.

However, some experts disagree on the benefits of dolphin assisted births, claiming the unpredictability of wild animals could put the mother and child in harm’s way.

No matter how a mother chooses to give birth, it is up to her and should be respected, but this sure is one unique way to bring a child into our world.
