Walrus Calves Make Their Adorable Public Debut At SeaWorld

The SeaWorld Orlando community welcomed two walrus calves at the park’s Wild Arctic habitat this past Wednesday. The pair have become very close over the past few months after Aku was rescued from a gold mining dredge off the coast of Alaska. Ginger was born at SeaWorld Orlando and was very happy to have a new playmate. The two wasted no time getting acquainted and their care team loves seeing them interact with each other.

Visitors can now see Ginger and Aku up close, as their new home provides multiple angles both above and below water alongside harbor seals. Many other species share the exhibit with the baby walruses, including adult Pacific walruses and beluga whales.

Ginger and Aku are kept very busy and provide lots of entertainment for SeaWorld’s guests, playing with environmental enrichment devices and interacting with their care staff. Keeper talks will eventually be facilitated throughout the day to better inform the guests about our blubbery little friends, along with bottle feeding the calves several times a day.

SeaWorld’s goal is to better inform the public about walruses through Ginger and Aku, hopefully inspiring visitors to learn more about these creatures and make them aware of impending threats to their kind. Their species face threats of habitat loss due to declining floating sea ice and a diminishing food supply.
