Scientists Just Cracked a 20-Year Mystery Hiding Inside One of the Ocean’s Shyest Whales
Meet the pygmy sperm whale — a small, deep-diving whale so elusive that almost nobody has ever seen one alive and swimming. Most of what we know about them comes from the rare times they strand on Florida beaches. And that patience just paid off in a big way.
Researchers at Florida Atlantic University’s Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute went back through more than 20 years of stranding records — 59 whales between 1999 and 2020 — and found something new hiding in their stomachs: three previously unknown types of Helicobacter bacteria, now officially named Kogia Helicobacter 1, 2, and 3.
How they found it: In four of those whales, scientists spotted odd, spiral-shaped bacteria tucked into the stomach lining. Using DNA sequencing decades after the samples were first collected, the team confirmed these bacteria didn’t match anything on record. Two were genetic cousins of strains already known in dolphins; the third turned out to be something else entirely.
“To find novel strains of these bacteria in a deep-diving whale species is intriguing,” said Dr. Annie Page, the study’s senior author and a clinical veterinarian at FAU Harbor Branch.
Why this matters: Helicobacter bacteria are already known troublemakers in the stomachs of humans and other marine mammals, so pinning down new strains gives vets a real head start on understanding — and eventually treating — gut disease in a species we almost never get to examine. It’s also a reminder of just how valuable decades of quiet, unglamorous stranding response work can be. Without it, this discovery simply wouldn’t exist.
