Everyday Heroes Save A Sea Turtle

Sea creatures keep getting stuck in one human contraption or another. But this time, the coolest thing happened.

When two dive partners, Cameron Dietrich and Colin Sutton, went spear fishing for tuna in the Gulf of Mexico, they made an amazing discovery and were also lucky enough to catch it on video. While they may have not caught a world record tuna or found an undiscovered species, the two noticed something they couldn’t ignore: a sea turtle trapped in fishing line!

Without wasting a single second, Dietrich quickly rushed to the turtle’s aid to remove the fishing line and help this awesome sea turtle! Dietrich’s partner Sutton was not far behind with his GoPro video camera in hand, catching it all in live time.

Once the line was removed from the turtle’s left fin, the little guy immediately swam free. The divers thought that would be the last they would see of the lucky sea turtle, but shockingly, the turtle swam back toward them. The silent sea creature stopped right in front of Dietrich, perhaps to say thank you.

This is an incredible moment because according to the World Wildlife Fund, fishing gear is the single greatest threat to sea turtles.

Two divers taking the time to help out a sea turtle may create a kind of ripple effect for the greater good of humankind. If more divers, fishermen and marine enthusiasts learn from Dietrich and Sutton’s example, replenishing the sea turtle population would not be such a monumental task.
