Freediver and Tiger Sharks Get Up Close and Personal

Australian Christina Saenz de Santamaria is ranked as the number one female freediver in the world!

The extreme sport of freediving is centered around a diver’s ability to hold their breath underwater without the assistance of a breathing apparatus. It sounds – and looks – really hard, but it gives Christina a front row seat to our ocean’s majesty.

Recently Christine and her husband Eusebio were freediving in the Bahamas when they had a stunningly close encounter with tiger sharks.

Throughout the video – which is less than two minutes in length post production – you can see that the sharks come within an arm’s reach of the divers and their camera, but neither showed any signs of fear or aggression. They were peacefully sharing the same space, and making an awesome memory of the experience!

The freediver told Buzzfeed, “Our experiences of this largely misrepresented and misunderstood marine animal were literally breathtaking and informative. In light of the shark culls in Western Australia, our video is a striking contrast to both government and media portrayals of this mighty shark.”

Well said, Christina! We love your video, but mostly because we get to watch from the comfort of our computer screens!
