Must See TV: Portlandia Exposes SeaWorld Activists, Hilarity Ensues

PETA mouthpiece The Dodo breathlessly promoted this week’s episode IFC’s Portlandia and the show’s SeaWorld focus.

Only there was a major problem with their blind enthusiasm.  Portlandia was making fun of anti-SeaWorld activists like the The Dodo.

In the episode titled “SeaWorld”, Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein reprise their “ecoterrorist” characters from a previous season. As you can see from the clip Benji (Armisen) is in the protesting mood. The group settles on protesting against SeaWorld in San Diego because they didn’t want to “freeze their buns off” in Antarctica.

What’s missing from the clip is the rest of the episode.

The crew have too much fun in San Diego -fish tacos and margaritas – and protesting becomes less and less of a priority.

When they finally arrive at SeaWorld, the gang is in awe of the place. But not Benji. He bolts from the ticket line on his mission to save a whale.

Spoiler alert: He ends up rescuing a small fish.

But the fish rescue goes wrong. The merry band of activists end up killing the fish. Oh, and have a kick ass beach dance party.

We wonder if the radical activist realize the episode they couldn’t wait to see is actually skewering them for the sake of comedy? We doubt it.

But the rest of us can revel in the hilarity as it provides us a glimpse into the reality that the activists don’t really care about doing the hard work of saving animals. It’s about money, attention and being cool.

Thanks Portlandia!
