Did You Know a Blue Whale’s Heart Alone Weighs as Much as a Golf Cart?

Meet the largest animal to ever exist on Earth — bigger than any dinosaur that ever walked, swam, or flew. The blue whale isn’t just big. It’s big in ways that are genuinely hard to picture.

The size alone is staggering.  Antarctic blue whales, the largest of the bunch, can stretch up to 110 feet long and weigh more than 330,000 pounds — roughly the weight of 30 adult elephants standing on the same scale. Even their organs are supersized: a blue whale’s heart can weigh around 400 pounds, close to the size of a small car, and its tongue alone can outweigh a full-grown elephant.

And yet, they survive almost entirely on some of the ocean’s tiniest creatures.  Blue whales feed nearly exclusively on krill, tiny shrimp-like crustaceans, straining massive volumes of seawater through comb-like baleen plates instead of teeth. The biggest individuals can eat up to 6 tons of krill in a single day.

They’re also some of the loudest animals on the planet.  Blue whale calls can travel for hundreds of miles underwater, and like a fingerprint, each whale’s song has its own distinct pattern. Scientists still don’t fully understand everything these songs are used for, but they’re thought to play a role in communication and finding mates across vast stretches of open ocean.

Here’s the part worth genuinely celebrating:  blue whales were hunted to the edge of extinction during the commercial whaling era of the early 1900s, and their numbers dropped dramatically. Since receiving full international protection in 1966, populations have been slowly climbing back. They’re still endangered, and vessel strikes and fishing gear entanglement remain real threats — but a species this massive, this important to ocean health, is still out there today largely because people decided decades ago that it was worth protecting.

The biggest animal in the history of the planet, still swimming, still singing, still recovering.
