Ghana Trades Whales For Oil
Oil is a commodity that can make a country wealthy. Ghana understands this well, and is willing to trade the lives of innocent whales for wealth.
The whales seem to be dying because of injuries sustained from being slashed by the Floating, Production, Storage, Offload (FPSO) vessel which is responsible for drilling for oil offshore.
Ghana has been producing oil at commercial levels for around 3 years, which has generated around $2 billion dollars. The trade off to this whole equation is the amount of whale fatalities that have occurred as a result of the drilling.
Since 2008 there have been 26 whale deaths. If this number seems low to you, realize that the total population of whales off the coast of Ghana is around 150.
Unfortunately, this trend is expected to continue. Add to the fact that Ghana is developing a second FPSO and the future of whales in Ghana looks very bleak.
Ghana faces a ban on the sale of oil they produce if measures are not taken to protect the whales. Hopefully, the prospect of not being able to profit from the oil that is collected will force the country to implement a protection plan for these beautiful creatures.
Otherwise, in a few years there won’t be any whales off the coast of Ghana and this is something the world should not let happen.
