This Will Make Your Day: SeaWorld Rescues Humpback Whale
On June 7, 2014, the amazing team at SeaWorld San Diego responded to a call from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) that a humpback whale off the coast of Santa Barbara, near Santa Cruz Island, was in trouble. SeaWorld’s rescue team sprang into action to assess the situation.
Despite a grim outlook, SeaWorld’s team spent six hours detangling over 1,100 pounds of anchors, nets, fishing gear, and other items from around the whale’s body. For 48 hours the humpback whale had struggled and towed the gear for miles as it fought for its life.
SeaWorld’s animal rescue team was able to save the day for this whale. Once untangled, the whale silently swam away from the California coast. While the whale wasn’t able to personally thank SeaWorld’s rescue team, we will take a moment to thank those heroes who dedicate their lives to saving this whale’s life and any ocean animal in need of help!
