They may not be as cute and cuddly as a teddy bear, but polar bears are truly the coolest around. Here are some fun facts you may not know about these beautiful bears.
Under a polar bear’s fur they have black skin. This helps them to absorb heat and keep them warm in the frigid arctic.
Polar bears have a very strong sense of smell. They can smell their prey more than half a mile away.
Polar bears are able to swim up to 100 miles. Guess those paws are good for more than just life on the ice.
The fur of a polar bear is not white! The hairs are pigment free with a hollow cores, this reflects the light causing them to look white.
When polar bears are born they weigh little more than a pound. They will stay with their mother for 2 years as they grow and mature into independent polar bears ready to set out on their own.
Polar bears are the largest living carnivore on earth. On their hind legs they can reach a height of 10 feet and they can weigh more than 1,000 pounds!
To help keep clean polar bears roll in snow. These snow baths actually help to clean their fur, and clean fur means better heat trapping capabilities.
