We all know that lobsters are seriously delicious, but here are some shell binding facts that you probably didn’t know. To be honest, some of what you’re about to read might make you want to retire the lobster bib… or not. We’re not judging!
.) Lobsters can live to be upwards of 80 years old.
.) Lobsters are naturally blue, brown or greenish. They only turn red after you boil them because red is the only pigment that can survive the heat.
.) Lobsters can be left or right-handed (or should we say clawed) just like people, which means they can also be ambidextrous!
.) Lobsters have two stomachs. One is located behind the eyes and used for grinding food, while the other is in the abdomen.
.) A lobster goes number 1 through their face. Yep. At the base of the second antennae, there is a gland for excreting urine.
.) The female signals to the male that she is ready to mate by urinating nearby. Then she sheds her shell, but while she waits for it to grow back the male protects her. The female can carry sperm for up to 2 years before deciding to fertilize her eggs.
.) According to a recent study, scientists from the Maine Darling Marine Center and Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences suggested that lobsters could be headed for hot water by the year 2100. The study showed that a 5 degree Fahrenheit increase in water temperatures (which is the temperature predicted for 2100) caused the lobster larvae to struggle for survival.
