The Clearwater Marine Aquarium in Florida recently rescued a small seahorse. The tiny seahorse was found by a woman and her two daughters in the trash along the shore near Redington Shores.
The woman untangled the seahorse from the trash. The trash included a fishing line that was wrapped around its neck several times. After they untangled the seahorse, the family called the Clearwater Marine Aquarium to assist the fragile creature.
The staff at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium took the seahorse to their aquarium. The team is working to help the seahorse, named “Frito”, to make a full recovery. The aquarium staff is monitoring her progress towards recovery and will release her as soon as possible. It is hoped the seahorse will make a successful transition back into the ocean soon.
Clearwater Marine Aquarium has a habit of rescuing seahorses and naming them after different snacks! Last summer, they rescued a tiny little orange seahorse and named her Cheeto after a child mistook her for a cheeto on the ground, and then Funyun the seahorse came after!
If you have the chance, then you could go support her recovery efforts in person at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium. If you cannot make it to the aquarium in person, the staff has put a live “Frito cam” up on their website. You can watch Frito make progress towards her release from anywhere in the world.
Luckily, Frito seems to be doing well. However, her situation is a reminder of the devastating consequences that our human trash is having on our ocean.
