In southern Thailand, a whale recently died after ingesting over 80 plastic bags. The whale died after a desperate attempt by officials to nurse the animal back to a healthy state.
The whale was a young male pilot whale. He was first found in a canal near the Malaysian border very close to death. Although attempts to save him were tried, he was too far gone to save.
It was not a pretty scene. The whale was vomiting up plastic bags in its final moments. The autopsy revealed that 80 more plastic bags were in its stomach. It was a horrifying way to die.
Unfortunately, many animals around the world die like this every day. The ocean is full of our human trash and animals cannot be blamed for ingesting the ever-present trash. Imagine walking around your home and bumping into a floating plastic bag every other second, it would be a terrible experience. However, this is what life is like for some of our oceanic favorites. Even sea creatures that live in the deep and dark depths of the ocean have to deal with trash.
Please remember this as you move through your life. Anything we can do to reduce our plastic waste will help the animals in our oceans from a terrible fate.
