With plastic waste under fire all around the world, some Fortune 500 companies are pledging to make a difference by eliminating plastic straws. Recently, McDonald’s made a move to eliminate plastic straws from its business in the U.K. and Ireland with the goal of phasing out the plastic variety in all 1,361 locations by 2019.
Now, Star DJ Calvin Harris and his tour partners at Hakkasan in Las Vegas are partnering in an effort to eliminate all single-use plastic straws from the group’s nightclubs and restaurants.
The Hakkasan hospitality company plans to take action to eliminate plastic straws immediately.
“My friend and tour photographer Conor McDonnell has been working closely with the World Wildlife Fund and has been sharing his first-hand experience of the damage plastic waste is doing to the environment,” Harris explained. “We want to reduce the impact of harmful plastics, so we decided to take action. I am grateful to Hakkasan Group for supporting us and helping us make a difference, I hope other venues in the city and around the world will do the same.”
With 500 million straws being used and discarded in the United States every day, making their way into our oceans and causing harm to marine life, even the smallest step can make a huge difference.
“In the fast-paced environment in which we operate, it’s easy to lose sight of wider social issues on which we have an impact,” said Hakkasan Group CEO Nick McCabe. “We’re incredibly proud to partner with Calvin on this initiative to reduce our consumption of single-use plastics.”
