Earlier this summer, a group of killer whales put on an amazing show for a boat of whale
watchers in Monterey bay. The whales were not just present, but they were in a very playful
mood.
At least a dozen whales were surfing around the boat, jumping, tail flapping and even the
younger orcas seemed to be playing tag. It is always a good day when you see orcas on the
water, but it is even better when they are interacting with the boat.
It was a very lucky day for the passengers aboard the boat!
Killer whales enjoy playing with each other, but not as much with other whales. In fact, during
the summer months they can often be seen harassing mothers and calves of other species of
whales in hopes of killing the calf. Although it is an unfortunate event for the other calf, it is a
necessary part of life in the Pacific Ocean.
In fact, these killer whales were frolicking after killing and eating a nearby calf. A local marine
biologist, Nancy Black, said, “They get playful and social when they are full. You’ll see lots of tail
flips and the young ones chasing each other.”
