We’ve all done it, whether it be to a loved one or a pet…you know that thing where you “boop” someone on the nose? Well if you love “booping” or watching video of cats and dogs “booping,” you’re going to love the name of the fish we’re talking about today. The fish is called the boops boops fish and it’s native to the eastern Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean and Black seas.
The fish, also known as the “bogue,” is a type of seabream. It can be found at depths up to 100 meters. When the feed they do so in schools that rise o the surface at night. They feed on seaweed, crustaceans and some plankton. Bogue can reach up to 36 cm but average 20 cm.
Boops boops is commercially fished an marketed in sizes from small to large. They need to be cleaned and cooked fresh or they begin to develop a bad taste. The can be pan fried, broiled or baked and taste quite good. However, a lot of the boops boops caught are used for fishmeal or bait. Boops boops are prone to a lot of parasites like flatworms, roundworm, spiny-headed worms, and crustaceans.
The name boops boops is a romanization of the Greek boōps which means “cow eye.” In most languages its common name refers to the fish’s, large bugged out eyes. But we think it’s just a fun name to say! What do you think? Would you boop a boops boops?
