Julia Wheeler is a professional free diver from Perth, Australia. AND she is a mermaid! This woman can hold her breath for more than four minutes and explore the depths of the sea with the creatures that live there.
It all started when she was a little girl watching the Little Mermaid. After deciding that she wanted to be just like Ariel, she started practicing holding her breath at age five in her bathtub.
Over the year she spent a lot of time in the water but she said, “When I started diving I found swimming with breathing apparatus really strange, so I did a freediving course and became obsessed”
10 years ago she took a freediving course to become an underwater photographer. Not surprisingly, this mermaid was amazing at holding her breath, so she entered the Australian Freediving Nationals in Indonesia and qualified for the World Championships.
Since taking that course she has dived with whales, sharks, rays and more. She claims that she really does “feel a part of their world when down there with them.”
Recently, she took part in a series of photo shoots that really show just how comfortable she is under the sea. She hoped that the breathtaking photos inspire others to embrace and protect the ocean in the future.
