Cephalopods – better known as the octopus, squid, or cuttlefish – have many unique characteristics that have previously baffled and awed scientists and engineers.
But further study of their camouflaging techniques has led researchers to develop an “optoelectronic camouflage system” that, like the cephalopods, can recognize color in its surroundings and adjust the surface to blend in.
That’s pretty awesome.
Right now the prototype is small – less than one square inch – and can mimic black, white, and several shades of grey. But with further testing and adaptation, this technology could be used in the fields of defense and industry.
Invisibility cloak, anyone? It could be possible.
