On December 11, two marine biologists broke the Guinness Book of World Records for the longest time spent living underwater!
The previous record was help by Richard Presley who spent 69 days and 19 minutes in the Jule’s Undersea Lodge in 1992 as part of a NASA experiment.
Bruce Cantrell and Jessica Fain are living in the very same hotel off the coast of Key Largo, Florida, and have now accomplished their goal of beating the world record.
Cantrell and Fain, biology professor/instuctor from Roane State Community College in Tennessee, are living under the sea for more than just breaking a record though. They want to use this experience to learn more about marine biology and share what they learn about the ocean with others.
The pair of researchers have been posting videos to their YouTube Channel, Classroom Under the Sea, each week educating people on the insights they are gaining from being constantly surrounded by the ocean.
Some of the favorite topics included: problems associated with the invasive lionfish, the impacts divers have on marine life, and the similarity in living below the sea and in outer space.
Below is their final video, posted on the day the record was broken, that summarizes their underwater living experience.
Cantrell and Fain will return to the surface on Monday, December 15, setting the new record for 73 days below water!
