Someday in the future your visit to the salad bar could include leafy greens grown in a very unusual farming environment – under the waves.
Sergio Gamberini came up with this idea while scuba diving in Noli, Italy a few years ago. With his own diving business and a lifelong love of the ocean, Gamberini began experimenting.
Fast forward and Gamberini has built a series of underwater greenhouses resembling balloons and is growing plants – all 25 feet underwater. The operation is called Nemo’s Gardens.
Team members make dives to the Mediterranean sea floor with carefully sealed bags of soil and seeds. The balloons hold enough trapped air to allow divers the freedom to remove their mask while they work.
