One kayaker’s horrifying experience was caught on camera by Gene Mace, and it is quite the terrifying incident. We can hear Mace talking to his wife about the incident as it’s happening. The video shows the fin breaking the surface near the kayak multiple times as the shark kept attacking the kayak.
Brian Correiar, the kayaker in danger, wrote about his experience in a blog post. The story from his perspective is “I heard a loud bang as my kayak and I flew into the air. I landed outside my boat, look back to it and to my horror saw a large great white shark no more than three feet away had my kayak in its mouth.”
How would you react to that jarring jolt into the Pacific Ocean with a great white shark just feet away from you? Correiar was very cool under the pressure and remember to not splash, swim away and just don’t act like a panicked seal. I don’t think I would be able to remember that while in the water with a shark.
He swam away from the kayak (and shark) toward shore as fast as possible. A sailboat picked him up after about five minutes of swimming and then the Coast Guard took him to shore from there. He is lucky a sailor was there to pick him up.
